I’m just thought I’d give a mention to Movember which finished just before this blog started.
For those who don’t know Movember is the renaming of the month of November with an M to bring a awareness around the world of men’s health issues. It also is signified by men having a Mo, or Moustache.
Participants are expected to start clean shaven and then grow a moustache throughout November. I, like many, grew a moustache for Movember. At the moment I still have it because it makes me look different. I’ll see how I feel about keeping it.
Movember raises money for men’s mental health, suicide prevention, prostate and testicular cancer. It does this by having runs and various other events.
One way to raise money for the month is to walk, run, cycle or swim 60 km (about 37 miles). This represents the 60 men who commit suicide every hour in the world.
It gives money to research projects and support groups.
This year it created the Movember Institute of Men’s Health, an organisation to bring together experts to accelerate research, deepen our understating of men’s health and develop improvements for men’s health.
There are also projects to use AI to help speed up prostate cancer diagnosis, support for a large prostate cancer screening program, an international research programme on testicular cancer and mental; heath projects for various groups such as athletes or games.
.
It began in 2003 with just 30 men. Today the November foundation has spread to 20+ countries. To date it has raised hundreds of millions of dollars in these countries. It encourages men to have a healthy lifestyle, get regular checkups and be aware of the genetic history of their family.
The event is run by the Movember Foundation out of Melbourne , Australia and their motto/call to action is simple and spot on as is the whole concept, “Change the face of men’s health”.
